Rough Fell
Rough Fell is the local breed in the area and also the largest of the UK hill breeds. Bright and bristly, their fibres are strong and long. Full of kemp and character, these fleeces are a fascination to work with by hand.

Fleece Selection Help
Hoggs are young sheep and this is their first shear, so their fleeces tend to be softer.
Ewes are older sheep and still produce great fleeces.
Gimmer hogg - young female sheep
Tup hogg - young male sheep. Tups tend to produce larger fleeces.
Show sheep are selected by their owners and entered into local shows. We bag them separately to celebrate the traditional local show for Rough Fell sheep.
⚠️ Fleeces are raw and unwashed, exactly as they were shorn off the sheep. Fleeces are skirted, lightly picked and rolled. They still contain lanolin and vegetable matter, and must be processed further before use.
