Rough Fell is the local breed in the area and also the largest of the UK hill breeds. Bright and bristly, their fibres are strong and long. Full of kemp and character, their fleeces are a fascination to work with by hand.

  • Raw Rough Fell fleece

  • Bright, lengthy and strong

  • High in kemp so lots of texture

  • Great for weaving

Fleece Selection Help

  • Hoggs are young sheep that have yet to lamb. Typically their fleeces are softer and have less kemp.

    • Gimmer hogg - young female sheep

    • Tup hogg - young male sheep. Tups tend to produce larger fleeces.

  • Show sheep are selected by their owners and entered into local shows. These sheep are typically sheared earlier in preparation for shows and so we bag them separately.

  • Straight - straight fibres with no crimp or curl

  • Curly - slight natural curl to fibres

⚠️ Fleeces are raw and unwashed, exactly as they were shorn off the sheep. Fleeces are skirted, lightly picked and rolled. They still contain lanolin and vegetable matter, and must be processed further before use.
